Massage

Massage therapy helps us to relax and help ease aches and pains. It helps trigger the release of the body's natural painkillers and gives a general sense of contentment.

Massage is a general term that covers Swedish, Sports and Remedial massage, as well as many other forms. Each type of massage has its own specific methods, so its best to speak to your therapist to see which is best for your needs.

Sports Massage

The prime purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Above all, it can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether one is an athlete, ardent keep-fitter or a once a week jogger.

This treatment is not just for the sports person: anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious (occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries).

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy aims to treat the whole person by helping to restore the harmony of mind, body and spirit.

It works with the pure properties of plants, using their essential oils in a natural, complementary therapy which can help improve both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Aromatherapy is most effective in therapeutic massage using relaxing or uplifting fragrances. Essential oils can also be used at home in baths, oil burners, inhalations, body lotions to name just a few.

Using essential oils can be dangerous so ask a qualified Aromatherapist before using any oil at home, and keep out of the reach of children.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a popular and relaxing holistic treatment based on the principles that reflex points on the soles of the feet are connected to corresponding areas throughout the body. In this way, the feet can be seen as "a map" of the body.

Reflexologists work on the reflexes with their thumbs and fingers using specialised massage techniques, said to help correct imbalances throughout the body, and help release blocked energy.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is a seated massage which is given fully clothed and is the ideal stress-busting treatment for anyone who is suffering from aching shoulders, a tight neck, tension headache, eye strain, insomnia, or poor concentration. It is a safe, simple yet effective therapy renowned for relieving symptoms of stress.

Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling (Thermo Auricular Therapy) can be used to treat many conditions of the ear, nose and throat area. The candles work by vaporising their ingredients once lit, causing convectional air flow towards the first chamber of the ear. The candle creates a mild suction and warmth which lets the vapours gently massage the eardrum and auditory canal. Once the candle is placed in the ear it forms a seal which enables wax and other impurities to be drawn out of the ear.

Reiki

Reiki is a non-invasive therapy and its purpose is to treat holistically and to restore homeostasis.

When a Reiki therapist channels the energy through their hands to a client, the body's natural ability to heal itself is activated. The energy is directed to where it is needed most and healing takes place in the form of: releasing blocked energy paths, cleansing the body of toxins and creating a state of balance.

Western Herbal Medicine

Western Herbal Medicine is the use of plants (herbs), mainly from Europe to help achieve optimum health and help with a wide variety of health issues.

Herbal medicine is used to help all ages and for many of the conditions about which you would go your GP. The National Institute of Medical Herbalists (www.nimh.org.uk) gives more information. Herbs can act on the body as powerfully as pharmaceutical drugs and need to be treated with care so always see a properly qualified herbalist. Our Resident Medical Herbalist can diagnose and treat you as an individual and get to the heart of your health problem, working alongside doctors, complementary therapists and other health professionals if required.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is one of the best and most effective ways to treat pain and injury. It uses firm-pressure designed to release tight layers of muscle and tissue, which usually develops from bad posture, injury or overuse. Restoring movement in the soft tissues alleviates pain, muscle spasm and stress from the problematic area.

Deep tissue massage will:

  • Un-stick tight muscles and free up creaky joints

What conditions can it treat?

Deep tissue massage is very effective in treating chronic problems such as stiff necks, strained or twisted shoulder muscles, and lower back stiffness or pain. It is also highly beneficial in reducing pain and discomfort in conditions such as whiplash and after a fall or an injury.

Thai Foot Massage

Thai Foot Massage is a massage of the feet and also lower legs. Thai foot massage is both invigorating and deeply relaxing and involves hands on massage, stretching and acupressure to stimulate reflex points. It has elements of Shiatsu, Reflexology, and Chinese massage, incorporated into the treatment. Traditional Thai Foot Massage includes the use of a traditional Thai foot massage stick as well as using the palms, fingers, thumbs and knuckles to work the feet.

Thai Foot Massage is great for tired feet, improving circulation and lymph movement in the feet and lower legs, and improving flexibility. If you have tried reflexology, you will also enjoy this fabulous treatment, but will be surprised at how different the techniques feel! Certainly, like reflexology, you will leave the session feeling relaxed, yet energized and invigorated!
